(JPR) — As the weather conditions in Metropolitan Manila and nearby provinces continue to improve after several days of experiencing heavy to intense monsoon rains, members of the Philippine clergy urged the faithful to pray for protection from calamities.

Heavy rains hit Metro Manila, nearby provinces

On Wednesday, Aug. 8, Msgr. Joselito Asis, secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), called on Filipinos to pray for good weather by reciting the “oratio imperata” for deliverance from typhoons, floods, and other calamities.

According to the general rubrics of the Roman Missal, oratio imperata is a special prayer prescribed by a local bishop that is to be said in times of grave need or calamity.

In a memorandum circular, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle also urged the clergy, the religious, and the faithful to pray the oratio imperata during masses, Holy Hours, celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours and the praying of the rosary.

CBCP also requested that the prayer be said in churches across the country.

The relentless rains experienced in Metropolitan Manila and nearby provinces forced nearly 540,000 families — or more than 2.4 million people — to flee their homes. At least 60 people were reported dead.

The state weather bureau said that Metropolitan Manila and nearby provinces are expected to experience improved weather conditions by Friday.

The full text of the oratio imperata in Filipino and English are reproduced below.

San Roque, ipanalangin mo kami.

Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to You
in gratitude for the wonders of creation of which we are part,
for Your providence in sustaining us in our needs,
and for Your wisdom that guides the course of the universe.

We acknowledge our sins against You and the rest of creation.
We have not been good stewards of Nature.
We have confused Your command to subdue the earth.
The environment is made to suffer our wrongdoing,
and now we reap the harvest of our abuse and indifference.

Typhoons, heavy rains and floods occur in increasing number and intensity.
We turn to You, our loving Father, and beg forgiveness for our sins.
We ask that we, our loved ones and our hard earned possessions
be spared from the threat of calamities, natural and man-made.

We beseech You to inspire us all to grow
into responsible stewards of Your creation,
and generous neighbors to those in need.
